Layering means we build your piece across healed sessions so your skin stays healthier and the final result looks sharper for years. This is Chris Bowen’s preferred way to tackle large scale tattoos and cover ups. Here's how it works:

Initial Consultation: Your journey starts with a free consultation. We'll talk through your idea, placement, size, cover-up needs if any, and whether a layered plan is the right fit. If the design doesn't read in the line stage—shoulder vs. background, face vs. fabric—color will not invent that separation later. We solve readability first, then we layer color and texture on top of a picture that already works. Small, simple tattoos often don't need this approach—and we'll tell you that honestly.

Why We Layer: Tattoo trauma is about force and time on the same skin. Packing heavy color and fine texture in one marathon can push the skin into a risk zone—patchy healing or, worst case, scar texture that more ink can't fix. For large or dense work, we split the hard passes across sessions with real heal time in between so each layer stays safer and clearer

Plan & Deposit: Custom work is hourly. Shop minimum is $100. Larger projects commonly land somewhere in the $300–$5,000 range depending on size, detail, and hours. A deposit is required to lock your design time and first session.

Session 1 — Foundation: We lock the stencil and build the base: structure, background, flat color or underlayers—whatever your piece needs first. First sessions already ask a lot of the skin. If the arm goes stiff or swollen, we stop—even if the day’s list isn’t finished. Better to leave clean healed skin for later than force a finish into tissue that can’t take another pass.

What You’ll See After Session One: A layered piece is not a half-finished version of the final photo. Some areas get flat color and wait for pattern. Some get texture and wait for color. Either way, the first pass can look simple, patchy, or even chaotic—a yellow fish with no scales, a dragon that doesn’t quite look finished.

Heal Window: Between layers we wait so your skin can reset—often around a month or two, which also lines up with how booked we are. You’ll get aftercare guidance and a check-in. We don’t rush layer two onto glossy, half-healed skin.

Session 2+ — Detail & Texture: On healed skin we add the pass that makes it sing: texture, volume, outlines, second color, soft blends. We pick the order that protects your skin and the design: color first, then texture—or texture first, then color. Both end in the same place. Right after the second pass, fresh color can hide the layer underneath. That’s temporary. As the new skin peels, the deeper color you already healed shows through again. We are stacking on purpose—not erasing session one. A reference on a phone is flat, lit, and six inches from your face. Your arm bends, twists, and gets seen across a room. We use texture, pattern, and contrast so the piece still separates when you move.

Outlines When They’re Useful: On large color pieces we often hold the bold outlines until the color has healed. Temporary light scratches keep the drawing in place so we are not racing to lock everything in black on day one. Color sitting under a later outline has no empty gap to blur into as the tattoo ages—so edges stay cleaner for years. Not every shape wants a black halo. If a flower should stay light, or a fish is part of the fabric—not swimming above it—we outline in a deeper version of that object’s own color so it belongs to the picture instead of floating on it.

Cover-Ups: Cover-ups are a specialty at Inked Arts. Layering is often the smarter path here—we rebuild coverage and detail without beating already-compromised skin in one go.
